Writers' Workshops

June 15-21, 2008

Located in the spectacular 17th Century village of La Roque Alric, 40 kilometres north of Avignon, our writers’ workshops offer an idyllic creative environment. This year’s themes are memoir, fiction and drama. Workshops (no more than six participants each) will be led by Kent Stetson and Marianne Ackerman.

Our special guest this year is best-selling author Marina Lewycka from the U.K. who will be on hand from June 18 as writer-in-residence. Marina will be joining us at dinner and reading from her novels, A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian and Strawberry Fields.

No previous writing or publishing experience is necessary. These workshops are intended for those seeking an inspiring environment in which to begin or advance a personal project. Our aim is to help you move your literary ambitions a few steps closer to your goal. The atmosphere is nurturing, restorative, convivial. Each session is restricted to a maximum of six participants.

You’ll be provided with a quiet, comfortable room in one of the many interesting houses in La Roque Alric. The schedule includes time to work on your personal project or workshop assignment each day. Group sessions will address important issues of craft. Instructors will also meet with participants individually. Evenings are a sociable occasion when everyone gets together for great food and fine wines. You’ll also have opportunities for walks in the hills and relaxation. A bus tour option is available for those who’d like an afternoon off to visit caves or other nearby points of interest (not included in the fee).

Send us an outline of your work-in-progress for an assessment of how the La Roque workshops might help you start, structure or advance a project. We’ll be happy to help you map out a program or work before you arrive.
